Commercial Auto Insurance in Connecticut

Keep your employees safe on the road

You might think it’s OK to use a personal vehicle for professional purposes, but what happens if you or one of your employees gets into a collision?

Because that vehicle wasn’t being used for personal reasons, any damage is not covered by your personal auto insurance policy. In fact, your claim could be denied even if you were driving for personal use.

Don’t put yourself in that situation.

Commercial auto insurance (sometimes called commercial car insurance or fleet insurance) is required for vehicles that are used for professional purposes.
You may require commercial auto insurance if …

● … you use a vehicle to transport people or products for a fee
● … you tow a trailer or lug tools/equipment around because of your work
● … your employees drive the vehicle(s) for work purposes
● … the vehicle is owned by a corporation or partnership

You may NOT require commercial auto insurance if …

● You transport clients on a casual basis (i.e. lawyers, real estate agents)
● You run a sales business on the side (i.e. kitchenware, jewelery, skincare) that doesn’t require much driving

Similar to personal auto insurance, a commercial auto insurance policy includes the following:

  • Liability coverage – pays for losses you have caused others in a motor vehicle collision.
  • No-fault coverage – which pays you and your passengers for medical and related expenses caused by injuries in a collision (regardless of who is at fault).
  • Comprehensive insurance (other than collision) – Vehicles can be damaged in ways that don’t involve a collision — like vandalism, floods, theft, and fire. This coverage will pay you fair market value for your car, minus the deductible.
  • Collision insurance – Coverage that pays for damage caused to your vehicle in an automobile collision. There is usually a deductible, which must be paid before the insurance will kick in — the higher the deductible, the less the coverage will cost.

But unlike personal auto insurance, a commercial auto insurance policy also covers you if you’re hauling a trailer or equipment that you do not own, if an employee needs to drive a vehicle you do not own, and if you need to rent a business vehicle because yours is temporarily inoperable.

No two businesses are exactly alike, and neither are insurance policies. Commercial auto insurance policies are designed based on the type of driving you and your employees do. We’ll talk with you about how the vehicles are used, which employees will be driving, and if any employees need commercial auto insurance coverage added to their personal vehicles.
